The H.B. Smith Cornet Band.

The modern H.B Smith Cornet band strives to recreate the splendor of the golden age of Victorian music by presenting for the audience a form of living history. Current director Robert R. Moore recreated the modern H.B Smith Cornet Band in 1979 in the shadow of the original Victorian icon. Much like the original ensemble, the modern group boasts only professional instrumentalists, all of whom have performed with distinguished institutions such as the Philadelphia Opera Company, the Ballet Company, Broadway theaters, and commercial music.

The modern ensemble, much like its Victorian predecessor, performs in venues across the entire East Coast- bringing the wonder of live professional music to audiences throughout the region. The H.B Smith Cornet Band has been featured on every local television network, and has appeared on WNJN's "State of the Arts" as well as WHYY's documentary on the life of the world acclaimed 19th century African-American composer, Francis Johnson. Our ensemble has been reviewed and acclaimed by every major newspaper in the greater Delaware Valley, and we have been nationally lauded in Dancing USA as being "one of the most unique ensembles performing today."

Living History

CMS and the H.B. Smith Cornet Band have tirelessly worked to preserve the music and history of 19th century America since the resurrection of the band in 1978, by late director Robert Russell Moore. Our concerts allow the audience to be a part of that golden age, and we make every effort to bring substantive historical programming and exciting educational resources to every performance.
